Choose Your Outdoor Greenery Wisely

While you can’t control the world, you can decide what trees and plants populate your yard. Trees produce pollen earliest in the season, and poplar, willow, and cottonwood trees are some common culprits.19 Try to identify which trees trigger symptoms and consider replacing them with a different type. Similarly, populate your garden with trees and plants fertilized by insects, such as pear and cherry trees and roses, in order to reduce pollen-heavy vegetation.20

Weed pollen can also be problematic for allergy sufferers, especially in the late summer to early fall. Pollen can come from a variety of weeds with ragweed, the worst offender, generating 1 million grains each day from just one plant. Sagebrush, tumbleweed, pigweed, and more can also cause plenty of misery. To reduce the pollen count in your yard, try to keep up with weeding and brush removal and use rocks or plastic gravel to prevent weeds from growing.21 22

Which Allergies Are Most Common

While weve talked about allergies to things like dander and pollen, these are not the most frequent adult-onset allergies. Per the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology or ACAAI and data published in 2017 from their Annual Scientific Meeting, the most frequent adult-onset allergies are those to food. In fact, food comprised nearly 50 percent of these allergies!

Which foods triggered the most allergies? Peanuts, shellfish, and tree nuts. The study discovered that Caucasian people were less likely to have peanut and shellfish allergies compared to Hispanic, Asian, and black people of adult age .

While, back in 2008, the rate of tree nut allergies among adults was only 0.5 percent, its jumped by 260 percent. As of 2017, when the study was published, that rate was now 1.8 percent.

In addition, in 2004, only 2.5 percent of adults were allergic to shellfish. Today, that number has seen a 44-percent spike, as 3.6 percent are affected by this seafood allergy in the United States alone.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology or AAAAI added that younger children aged one through three years old were also getting more food allergies. That said, they had fewer instances of shellfish allergies specifically.

Why Has The Allergy Season Of 2021 Been So Bad

The bad allergy season so far is largely the result of the mild winter seen across most of the country. Mold that would normally die off in the winter months remained due to warmer temperatures. That, combined with unusually high levels of tree pollen, has set off severe allergies for many people. Even individuals who normally suffer from no allergies or very mild symptoms have had bad reactions this spring. So, if youve noticed abnormal allergic reactions in 2021, youre far from alone.

More broadly, the unusually bad allergy season ties back to climate change. As mentioned above, warmer winters are less likely to kill off allergy-inducing molds. Because winter temperatures are growing progressively warmer across large parts of the world, we can expect to see a continuance of bad allergy conditions in the coming years.

In addition to allowing more allergens to survive until spring, a warming climate can lengthen the annual allergy season. As winter temperatures arrive later and depart earlier, both fall and spring allergy seasons are extended. This can be a real problem for severe allergy sufferers, who now find themselves living with allergies for large portions of the year.

Plan Your Time Outdoors

One of the best ways to manage a pollen allergy is to avoid exposure to pollen as much as possible and go outside when pollen counts are lowest.

All allergy sufferers know the amount of pollen falling varies by the season. However, the weather can also affect it. Dry, windy, and hot days can result in pollen being carried over long distances. On the other hand, you may find relief when the weather is humid and rainy because pollen is more likely to stay on the ground when its damp. Days without wind can be better too since pollen is not as easily spread when the air is still.13

Even the time of day can affect the amount of pollen in the air typically pollen counts are lowest before dawn, rise throughout the morning, and peak around the middle of the day. By late afternoon and early evening, the numbers decline again. City dwellers should note that pollen count arcs often go up and down later in urban areas than in the suburbs as it takes time for the wind to transport the airborne particles from more rural places.14 15

Spring and fall typically bring with them seasonal allergies and sometimes serious ones. In the case of pollen allergies, many people dont know that you can experience allergic reactions from pollen present in your food, not just the stuff floating around in the air. In these situations, the allergen isnt the food itself, but instead the pollen inside it. This is known as Oral Allergy Syndrome.

Pollen Allergy Causes Allergic Rhinitis

Tips For Preventing Allergies

While there is no cure for allergies, there are ways to reduce symptoms. Try the strategies below:

  • Track pollen counts. You can check your local forecast to see what the pollen concentration will be each day in your area. On days with high pollen counts, stay indoors and keep the windows closed.
  • Shower and change after spending time outdoors. This way you minimize the amount of allergens tracked through your home.
  • Delegate yardwork to someone without allergies. Hire a professional if necessary.
  • Run your air conditioning. This will help purify the air and remove allergens.
  • Invest in a portable HEPA filter. This is especially helpful for people who dont have air conditioning.

Banana Allergy In Babies: Symptoms And Risk Factors

The first food that most parents introduce to babies is the fruit banana. Babies love it because of its sweet taste and it is an extremely nutritious fruit packed with vitamins and minerals. However, not all babies can eat bananas as may have an allergic reaction. The symptoms of this allergy include a rash, diarrhea, vomiting, or in severe cases, anaphylaxis. The allergy depends on the childs immune system and food allergies are quite common among babies.

What Are The Different Types Of Pollen Allergy

Types of pollen differs from plant to plant and there are several hundred plants that release pollen into the air and cause allergic reactions. Which is why, it is quite possible that a particular type of pollen might not affect two different people the same way.

For e.g., Person A might be allergic to grass pollen. So, when he is around ragweed pollen, his allergic reactions might not get triggered.

Seasonal changes can also trigger a pollen allergy as they play a key role in pollen count. Some of the most common allergens are

What Are Adult Onset Allergies

Spring Allergies Survival Guide

Adult-onset allergies are those allergy symptoms that manifest later in life. This could be anywhere from younger adulthood, such as in a persons 20s, to a persons senior years, when they are 70 or 80 years old. Typically, if you lived through your 20s and your 30s without any new allergies, the chances of getting adult-onset allergies diminishes.

The strangest part about adult-onset allergies is that you can wake up today irritated by an allergen that didnt bother you yesterday. You could have been in contact with said allergen every single day for years with no adverse effects. Now, you have a runny nose, itching eyes and uncontrollable sneezing around that allergen.

How Can Latex Allergy Be Prevented

If you have latex allergy you should avoid direct contact with all products and devices that contain latex. Also avoid food that causes an allergic reaction. Latex allergy problems during dental, medical or surgical procedures can be prevented by warning health care providers about latex allergy before any test or treatment. Latex allergic people can receive medical or dental care in a latex-safe area. Hospitals and clinics that use only low protein latex gloves and non-latex gloves have experienced dramatic declines in new cases of latex allergy.

Allergists can provide latex-allergic people with information and assistance to help them avoid products which may contain latex. The American Latex Allergy Association also has additional information.

With the right treatment plan, youll understand how to manage your allergies, so you can be in control.

Are Banana Allergies Associated With Latex Allergies

Banana allergies and latex allergies are closely related as certain allergy-triggering proteins present in a banana are also present in latex. One such protein is chitinase, found both in bananas and latex. This phenomenon of being allergic to both latex and banana is known as a latex-fruit syndrome.

Food allergic people should always be cautious about eating, whether inside or outside the home. Always read the labels of packaged foods if they contain any allergen to avoid allergic conditions.

Most Common Pa Allergies

After a long, cold, dead winter, theres nothing more beautiful than the sight of flowers and trees blooming along Interstate 95 to signify the onset of spring. But with these beautiful sights comes an unpleasant side effect: spring allergies. Below we provide an overview of common culprits of seasonal allergy symptoms, what other allergens you have to look forward to later in the year and how to find relief.

Seasonal Allergies: What You Need To Know

Why Do We Have Allergies?

Pollen is an airborne substance that comes from grass, flowering plants, trees, and weeds. In the past 12 months, 19.2 million adults and 5.2 million children under 18 were diagnosed with hay fever, the name given to allergic rhinitis caused by pollen. When someone has hay fever, their immune system identifies pollen as a threat and releases signals that lead to congestion, itchy eyes, runny nose, and sneezing, as well as problems like sinus pressure and allergic conjunctivitis .

The amount of pollen in the air depends on the season and the geographic area in which you live. The study reported in PNAS found the most pronounced effects in Texas and the Midwestern United States. However, the Northeast can have a significant spring allergy season as well, Dr. Leeds says. Tree allergies are especially common in New Englandparticularly due to birch and oak. Pollen allergies can also cause a cross-reaction with certain foods in some people symptoms include an itchy or tingling mouth and throat after eating raw fruits and vegetables, seeds, and nuts.

People may also have allergic reactions to grass pollen in the late spring to early summer and weed pollen in the fall. Many people are multi-sensitized, so they are allergic to more than one type of pollen, and they can be symptomatic through all of the warm weather seasons, Dr. Leeds says. Pollen can be carried by the wind, so windy days are the worst.

How Is Pollen Allergy Treated

If you have pollen allergy, antihistamines can control itching and sneezing in the long term. It may be best to choose an antihistamine that does not make you drowsy. You can also use saltwater nasal spray to relieve your symptoms.

If you have moderate or severe pollen allergy, talk to your doctor about an intranasal corticosteroid spray, which you take regularly to prevent symptoms. There are different brands and strengths, so make sure you follow the instructions carefully. Some medications combine an antihistamine and intranasal corticosteroid nasal spray.

If pollen allergy is causing asthma symptoms, it is very important to keep your asthma under control. Your doctor may give you anti-inflammatory asthma medicine to take, especially during times of the year when your symptoms get worse.

It is also possible to have allergen immunotherapy to ‘switch off’ your allergy to different pollens.

Are Allergies In Kids Different Than In Adults

It can be especially difficult to control allergies in kids, Dr. Leeds says, adding that kids tend to spend more time outdoors and, thus, are exposed to more pollen. A high pollen count day is not going to deter them from going to the playground, says Dr. Leeds. Thats unlike an adult who might say, ‘Im going to drive my car to work, keep the windows rolled up, and not take that walk during lunch.’

Another difference is that allergies in adults are usually well-established, while in kids there is the hope that they will outgrow them, Dr. Leeds says.

With kids, we talk about the concept of atopy, which is an allergic predisposition, she says. For a child with a strong family history of any allergiesand especially for those who develop symptoms early in lifedoctors look out for the four main allergic diseases: eczema, food allergies, nasal allergies, and asthma. These allergic diseases, in general, are increasing in prevalence, she says.
