Do Airborne Allergens Cause Atopic Dermatitis
Theres not a lot of work on this but there have been a couple studies. In one interesting study done 20 years ago , researchers looked at an aeroallergen bronchial challenge. The rash is usually itchy, red and scaly. Scratch marks often occur due to the itchy nature of the rash. If one has this rash for a long period of time the affected skin can become thicker.
The dry skin can worsen the itching and rash. An itch-scratch cycle can occur with rubbing or scratching the skin causing more irritation, and thus, additional itching.
The rash can become worse after eating certain foods. In the case of eczema, this is usually a delayed reaction. However, other reactions to foods can occur more immediately, including hives and swelling. Allergy testing, either by blood or allergy skin prick may be performed by an allergist / immunologist to determine a possible presence of an immediate food allergy. Allergy tests are often positive even in patients who tolerate the food in their diet, and thus foods should not be removed from your diet solely based on the results of these tests.
It is important to talk with an allergist / immunologist about your rash. Other types of rashes such as psoriasis and contact dermatitis can look like the eczema rash. In addition, people with various other immune problems such as immune deficiencies and vitamin deficiencies can have a similar rash. Disadvantages Of Allergy Immunotherapy
As with all types of medical procedures and treatments, allergy desensitization has some drawbacks. Following are some of the more common disadvantages of allergy shots:
- Immunotherapy does not work on every type of allergy. It is true that shots work well for common allergies such as pet dander, pollen, dust, and other pollutants found in the home. How Is Food Allergy Testing Interpreted
A negative result indicates that allergy is very unlikely to be the problem. A positive test means that the allergic antibody is present.

Patients can sometimes test positive for a general peanut specific IgE, but when you look at the components, youll find that theyre positive to the components that cross-react with pollens and other plants and negative to Ara h2. In this case the patient would likely tolerate peanut.
