Is it OK to take Zyrtec everyday

The usual dosage for adults younger than 65 years and children who are 6 years and older is one 10-milligram dose per day. You shouldnt take more than 10 mg in 24 hours. Your doctor may recommend a 5-mg dose once or twice per day if your allergies are mild.

What Should I Avoid While Taking Allegra 24 Hour Allergy

Avoid using antacids within 15 minutes before or after taking a medication that contains Allegra 24 Hour Allergy. Antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb this medication.

Fruit juices and certain antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb Allegra 24 Hour Allergy. Do not take this medicine with fruit juice .

Avoid taking any other cold or allergy medicines unless your doctor has told you to.

When To See A Doctor

Some side effects of taking antihistamines can mimic symptoms of an overdose. These include mild nausea, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

These symptoms dont usually require medical treatment, and may subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Even so, check with a doctor if you have side effects. You may need to reduce your dosage or take a different medication.

The difference between a side effect and an overdose is the severity of symptoms. Severe symptoms like rapid heart rate, tightness in the chest, or convulsions require a visit to the emergency room.

Antihistamines are safe when used properly. Here are some tips to avoid ingesting too much:

  • Dont take two different types of antihistamines simultaneously.
  • Dont take more than the recommended dosage.
  • Dont double up on doses.
  • Keep drugs out of reach of children.
  • Dont take two doses too close together.

Make sure you read labels carefully. Some antihistamines can interact with other drugs you take. If you dont know whether its safe to combine an antihistamine with another medication, speak with a doctor or pharmacist.

Be mindful that some antihistamines include other ingredients like a decongestant. If you take these types of antihistamines, its important that you dont take a separate decongestant.

Can I Give Antihistamines To My Child Without Talking To A Doctor

If you suspect your child has allergies, it is important to consult with a pediatrician before administering over-the-counter medications. Children with allergies often have other underlying conditions, such as asthma and eczema, which require prescriptions and long-term management. Please make sure to read the directions for each antihistamine carefully, as each medicine has different guidelines for the minimum age for use.

Can You Combine Allergy Nasal Sprays

ZYRTEC® Tablets for Allergy Symptom Relief

I would suggest topical nasal steroids, assuming they dont have a contraindication, says Dr. Gels. Those are nasal sprays. Flonase, Nasacort, and Rhinocort are available over the counter.

He continues, However, if itchy eyes are the patients main issue, a topical antihistamine is better. Some choices include Ketotifen over the counter, or a prescription like Olopatadine .

You should avoid nasal decongestant sprays such as oxymetazoline unless absolutely needed. Even then, do not use Afrin for more than use three to five days. These drugs cause rebound congestion and are addictive.

Skip Having A Drink With Dinner

Drinking any type of alcohol increases blood flow to the linings of your nose and can make nasal allergy symptoms worse, notes Dykewicz. Also, if youre someone who has year-round nasal issues, including frequent congestion, this scenario can be complicated by alcohol. When seasonal allergies hit and youre already feeling congested, skip the beer or wine to avoid worsening your allergy symptoms.

Cautions With Other Medicines

Some medicines and cetirizine interfere with each other and increase the chances of you having side effects.

Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you’re taking:

  • midodrine, a medicine used to treat low blood pressure
  • ritonavir, a medicine used to treat HIV infection
  • any medicine that makes you drowsy, gives you a dry mouth, or makes it difficult for you to pee taking cetirizine might make these side effects worse

  • Most antihistamines are also safe for children over 2 years old.
  • If you are breastfeeding or pregnant, ask your provider if antihistamines are safe for you.
  • Adults who take antihistamines should know how the medicine affects them before driving or using machinery.

Be Smart Be Aware Of Allergy Medication Side Effects

Natural remedies for allergies

Smart use of allergy medications knowing how they treat symptoms, being aware of potential unwanted side effects and, most important, monitoring their effect on you and your health is just one step toward controlling allergy and cold symptoms. Even more important: knowing what you are allergic to and taking steps to prevent or reduce exposure.

If your allergy symptoms tend to last longer than two weeks or are not adequately controlled with over-the-counter medications, schedule an appointment with a board-certified allergist for a full diagnosis.

Antihistamines and intranasal corticosteroids are intended for symptom relief. If antihistamines or intranasal corticosteroids are causing side effects such as drowsiness or other problems, there are other treatment options your doctor can offer you, such as allergen immunotherapy.

What Happens If I Miss A Dose

Since cold or allergy medicine is taken as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medication regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What Are Allergy Shots

Allergy shots, also called immunotherapy, are injections that are meant to build up your immune system so that you are less sensitive to the allergen that cause your allergy symptoms. Allergy shots consist of a very small amount of the allergen. Each time you receive an allergy shot, your body makes antibodies to that allergen. The next time you are exposed to that allergen, the antibodies made by your body block the effects of the allergen so that your symptoms are less severe.

Allergy shots are allergen-specific. For example, if you are allergic to ragweed, you would get an allergy shot that contains very small amounts of ragweed.

People who may benefit from allergy shots are people who have severe allergy symptoms that cannot be adequately controlled by allergy medications despite using them appropriately. Allergy shots can also be used by people who are exposed to a lot of allergens and cannot avoid them.

Pls do not double dose. Says ten milligrams for ages six and over once a day. Does say if u r over 200 lbs u can take two.Have you ever tryed zyrtec. Its over the counter and works better than claritin per research

If it was me I would switch to zyrtec and if that doesn’t work. I would call my drBest of everything

am in the 200 lb range i never tried zyrtec

Then it says u can take two a day. If that does not work try zyrtecLet me know please and feel better

kaismama

My reference says do not exceed 10mg a day. If 10 doesn’t work, more isn’t going to. Very few medications for adults are dosed by weight.

Lots. Of my meds r dosed by weight. I did plenty of research on this question. Also said that zyrtec might work better or see your dr

ranell6

thanks i will try 2 of them it it dont work then i will try the other one

Ok feel better and let us know 🙂

My allergists have all approved a second dose in a 24 hour period, and I’ve heard that two Claritin in 24 hours is the European standard. I know teenage athletes who are very thin who do. I often take the second dose at 12 hours, but sometimes take them together if symptoms are really bad. One Zyrtec, by the way, made me feel like I was heavily medicated and I literally couldn’t function — my own reaction, but just FYI.

great answer; thanks for weighing in.

Thanks for that, really helpful

How Much To Take

Cetirizine comes as tablets and capsules and as a liquid medicine .

The usual dose in adults is 10mg once daily.

Doses are usually lower for people with kidney problems.

For children, your doctor will use your child’s weight or age to work out the right dose.

If you have bought cetirizine for a child, follow the instructions on the packet.

Depending on their age, children may take cetirizine twice a day. In this case, try to space the doses 10 to 12 hours apart.

What Is The Typical Xyzal Dosage

A Xyzal 5mg breakable tablet once daily in the evening is the dosage for adults and children from 12 to 64 years of age. A 1/2 tablet once daily in the evening may be appropriate for less severe symptoms. Childrens Xyzal is also available in an oral solution for children 2 to 11 years old.

Are There Side Effects Associated With Prescription Nasal Sprays

Prescription nasal sprays include antihistamines, anticholinergics, and inhaled corticosteroids. When it comes to prescription nasal sprays for allergies, most side effects occur locally in the area of the body where you’re applying the medication. Nasal sprays can cause side effects such as nasal irritation, stinging, burning, sneezing, and nosebleeds. Other side effects may include dizziness, dry mouth or throat, throat irritation, changes in taste, and headache. Not everyone will experience these side effects, and the extent and severity may depend on each individual and the specific nasal spray. You and your doctor can determine which medication is most appropriate for you.

What Can You Do About Drowsiness From Allergy Medicines

Three ways to take The Pill

Some antihistamines are less likely to cause drowsiness than others. Reactions vary considerably from one person to another. What relieves your symptoms without making you sleepy may be different from what works for someone else.

When you find one that works for you, stick with it check chemical ingredients and dosages before changing brands or generics. On the other hand, if one doesnt work for you, try another type.

First-generation antihistamines such as diphenhydramine usually cause drowsiness because they are less likely to affect the histamine produced in the brain or have other unwanted effects in the brain.

Newer, second-generation antihistamines such as cetirizine , fexofenadine and loratadine marketed as nonsedating usually cause less drowsiness. An added benefit is that second-generation antihistamines last longer than Benadryl. Allegra is generally the least sedating.

Nasal spray antihistamines are also somewhat less likely to make you sleepy, since they target nasal passages directly rather than sending medicine throughout your body in the bloodstream. These are available only by prescription.

Regular use of an intranasal corticosteroid is not only safe but also an effective way to reduce use of antihistamines. They take a few days to start working, so you need to be patient. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using an antihistamine with an intranasal corticosteroid the first few days. Some intranasal corticosteroids are available over-the-counter.

Can I Cut My Antihistamine Tablet In Half

Many antihistamines can be cut in half without affecting their safety. Keep in mind, however, that a half-dose is 50% of what the FDA recommends you may need for the drug to work effectively. If an antihistamine is formulated with an extended-release component or is in a gel capsule, it should not be cut in half. The following table only applies to solid antihistamine tablets without added components:

Antihistamine

Yes: Cutting a 10 mg tablet in half may affect how this medication is released

Loratadine

Yes: Cutting a 10 mg tablet in half does not affect its safety but may reduce its effectiveness

How To Take It

You can take cetirizine with or without food.

Always take cetirizine tablets or capsules with a drink of water, milk or juice. Swallow them whole. Do not chew them.

Cetirizine liquid may be easier for children to take than tablets or capsules. The liquid medicine will come with a plastic syringe or spoon to help you measure out the right dose.

If you don’t have a syringe or spoon, ask your pharmacist for one. Do not use a kitchen teaspoon as it will not give the right amount.

Deaths From Antihistamine Overdose

There have been reports of death due to antihistamine toxicity. These include accidental overdoses and intentional misuse.

Death can occur when an overdose causes severe complications such as respiratory distress, cardiac arrest, or seizures. Each persons tolerance to medication can vary. However, toxicity usually occurs when a person ingests three to five times the recommended dosage.

Medical emergency

To avoid life-threatening complications, call 911 or go to the emergency room if you have any symptom of an overdose. You can also call the Poison Control Help Line at 800-222-1222.

Timing Enhances Allergy Asthma Drugs

Using Claritin for Kids: Is It Safe?

For Best Effect, Take Allergy, Asthma Medication at Specific Times

April 13, 2007 — Take your allergy pills before bedtime and your asthma medications in the late afternoon, a prominent allergist suggests.

Your body behaves differently at different times of the day, notes Richard Martin, MD, head of the pulmonary division at National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver.

These so-called circadian rhythms affect allergy and asthma, too.

Martin says hay fever symptoms — such as weepy eyes, runny nose, and sneezing — peak in the morning hours. So taking your 24-hour allergymedications before going to bed means that you’ll get the maximum effect when you need it the most.

“Taking your allergy medication at night assures that it will be circulating in your blood stream when you most need it, early the next morning,” Martin says in a news release.

Asthma symptoms, Martin says, peak at about 4 a.m. Patients with severe asthma, who need oral steroid drugs, should take this medication in the afternoon at 3 p.m.

People with less severe asthma use steroid inhalers. These drugs have their greatest effect when taken between 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., Martin says.

Who Can And Can’t Take Cetirizine

Cetirizine tablets and liquid that you buy from pharmacies and supermarkets can be taken by adults and children aged 6 and older.

Children over the age of 2 can also take liquid cetirizine for hay fever and skin allergies.

Cetirizine can also be taken under medical supervision by children aged 1 year and older.

Cetirizine isn’t suitable for some people. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you:

  • have had an allergic reaction to cetirizine or any other medicines in the past
  • have an allergy to the food additives E218 or E216
  • have an intolerance to or can’t absorb some sugars, such as lactose or sorbitol
  • have liver or kidney failure
  • have epilepsy or another health problem that puts you at risk of fits
  • have a condition that means you have difficulty peeing
  • are booked to have an allergy test taking cetirizine may affect the results, so you might need to stop taking it a few days before the test

Is There A Cure For Allergies

Unfortunately, there is currently no known cure for allergies. People with allergies should work with their health care provider to keep their allergies under control. Allergies can be effectively controlled and managed through a treatment plan that includes avoiding allergens and taking appropriate medication that works for you. Some people may also be considered for allergy shots, which do not cure allergies but can prevent allergy symptoms by getting the immune system to become less sensitive to allergens.
